October - March

Doe & Hind Stalking in Scotland

Doe and hind stalking provides some of the most rewarding and challenging deer stalking available in Scotland. Taking place during the winter months, this style of stalking offers the opportunity to pursue female red deer (hinds) and roe deer (does) while playing an important role in responsible deer management.

At Woodmill Shootings we offer guided doe and hind stalking experiences between October and March, providing guests with the chance to experience traditional Scottish stalking during the quieter winter season. These outings take place across carefully managed ground in both Highland and lowland areas, giving stalkers a variety of terrain and stalking opportunities.

Why Hind and Doe Stalking Is Important

While stag and roebuck stalking often attract attention due to trophy antlers, experienced stalkers recognise that hind and doe stalking is fundamental to sustainable deer management.

Responsible culling of female deer helps:

  • maintain balanced deer populations

  • protect woodland regeneration and farmland

  • improve herd health and genetics

  • prevent overgrazing in sensitive habitats

Across Scotland, deer management plans rely heavily on winter hind culls to maintain healthy ecosystems and sustainable deer populations.

For many experienced hunters, hind stalking is also considered one of the most challenging forms of stalking, requiring careful observation and precise shot placement when animals are often moving in larger groups.

The Winter Stalking Experience

Doe and hind stalking takes place during the colder months of the year, when deer behaviour changes and environmental conditions can add an extra challenge.

Winter stalking typically involves:

  • early morning outings at first light

  • careful glassing of hillsides and woodland edges

  • stalking groups of deer using wind and terrain

  • approaching animals quietly across open ground

Because hinds and does often travel in groups during winter, selecting the correct animal and ensuring a safe shot requires patience and clear communication between the stalker and guide.

The winter months also bring some of the most dramatic scenery in the Scottish countryside. On clear days, frost-covered hills and open landscapes provide spectacular conditions for a memorable stalking experience.

Whether you are a seasoned stalker or new to the sport, our goal is to provide a safe, ethical and enjoyable stalking experience.

Terrain and Stalking Areas

Doe and hind stalking with Woodmill Shootings takes place across a variety of terrain in Scotland, including both Highland and lowland landscapes.

These areas may include open hill ground, woodland blocks and forestry, farmland and shelter belts and rolling Highland glens. This mixture of habitats supports healthy deer populations and provides varied stalking experiences throughout the winter season.

A Different Side of Deer Stalking

Many stalkers discover that winter stalking offers a very different atmosphere compared with the more famous rut and summer stalking seasons.

With fewer visitors on the hills and quieter landscapes, doe and hind stalking provides a more relaxed and immersive experience. It is also an excellent opportunity for those looking to gain experience and develop their stalking skills.

The colder months require good fieldcraft, patience and an understanding of how deer move across the landscape in winter conditions.
