Regardless of the time of year, conditions while out stalking can change rapidly and the terrain can be physically demanding, so it’s crucial to be prepared with appropriate kit.

• Base layers - Moisture-wicking thermal tops and bottoms (merino wool or synthetic). You'll sweat even in cold weather, and cotton will make you cold once damp.

• Mid-layers - Fleece jackets, wool jumpers, or synthetic insulated layers for warmth. Hat and gloves is also recommended.

• Waterproof & breathable jacket - A high-quality, quiet (non-rustling) jacket with a hood. Gore-Tex or similar membranes are excellent. Look for durable materials that can withstand rough terrain. Muted, natural colors (greens, browns, olives) are best for blending in.

• Waterproof trousers/over trousers - Essential for staying dry. Consider options that can be easily pulled on over other layers.

• Sturdy, waterproof boots - High-leg, supportive boots are paramount for navigating uneven, often wet, and boggy terrain. Look for good ankle support, a stiff sole and a breathable waterproof membrane. If buying new, ensure to break them in before your trip.
